chkdsk stops at step 2 or gets interrupted

Okay, so my neighbor gave me his desktop PC to perform a clean install cause it was super slow and I'm pretty sure it has some malicious stuff in it. It's a really old PC, but I still wanna make this work. However, when I try to perfrom a clean install of Windows XP in the middle of the setup I get a blue screen saying that a problem has been detected about the hard drive. I tried running chkdsk /f from cmd and it won't run unless I restart the machine. After I restart it goes on till step 2 and every time it just stops on 82 percent and then Windows boots up. Also, defragmentation doesn't work cause of scheduled chkdsk. I even tried deleting the schedule from the Boot Execute register thing, but it doesn't even show it's scheduled there. No matter what I do, everytime I turn the PC on a chkdsk is trying to execute and it just stops in the middle of it. Any help is welcome and greatly appreciated!

Sure sign of a failed hard drive. Replace it.

I would also say that the HDD is most probably failing. You can see whether this is the case if you just take it out of the computer, attach it to another system either internally or externally(SATA to USB cable + power source) and test it with some of these: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
