Choosing a CD burner

My Acer 2X2X6 finally went belly up. Fry's has a 12X10X32 OEM in their ad for cheap. It has burn-proof. Two questions -Any chance that it is actually a Plextor? And if so, would that be a good choice, considering I have a somewhat slow computer (AMD K6-2 450,128mg ram,WinME). I have read that the Plextor's are excellent but not necessarily for slow computers. It's not a big deal if it would only write 8X. Heck ,look what I'm used to. They also have an 8/8/32 OEM in the ad for about 30 bucks less. It doesen't list a brand. A friend recently bought a "Cyndyne" there in retail box which turned out to be a Teac, so I figure it's worth checking out.

If it's a Plextor, it's a good choice, but it's probably not.

Well, in a moment of cheapness, I decided to go with the white box 12/10/32 which was 100 bucks even. Turns out it is not a Teac like the 8/8/32, but instead a Lite-On. That, I don't think is a good thing. I was ready to take it back because it was really s-l-o-w. I switched it to master on 2nd IDE channel and it burned 300mb in about 3 minutes on the fly. Much better! While it may not be as good as some, I think it will meet my needs. So far, no coasters. My old burner had a 512k buffer so on the fly was not an option, and even burning from the hard drive I made my share of coasters.
