Choosing A Soundcard For Gaming?

I'm trying to pair my headphones with a soundcard. (PC 360 Pro or G4ME Series; I haven't decided yet) and I was wondering what would give me the best performance to price ratio. I know that the Asus Xonar Essence STX is the best soundcard but it's too expensive. My budget is $100 but I can stretch it to $120 if needed.

You don't really need a SC for your PC, but if you are going to get a very good headphones, a SC can be needed to feel a difference between it and the onboard sound chip

Wouldn't a DAC+AMP be better for him? Those internal sound cards are more software based then hardware based. Something like a FiiO E10K?
