So, how exactly do you find a proper contrast ratio? LCD's range from ratios of 1000:1 to 50,000:1, but is there any difference? What does dynamic ratio add to the picture? Is there really a notible difference? Oh, and how does the HP w2558hc sound? Its a nice glossy monitor, was thinking of getting it

There is no one standard used by companies when reportion contrast ratios, the best advice i can give you if you are serious about wantimng a good quality monitor and not just something that will show a picture, is go to a store and physically look at one.
Many times i have read group test reviews and its rare for the one with the best tech specs to be the overall winner. realistically numbers mean nothing its how the set looks to your eye that matters.
