i have two ati(amd) graphics cards installed.one is r9 390x and other is hd 5450 .
i am using gigabyte 970a ds3p with am3+ chipset.
i want to use hd 5450 card for display and r9 card for calculations(opencl).
but by default r9 390x is being used as primary and display only works when connected to r9 390x
and it doesn't work when connected to hd 5450. and when i remove r9 390x then only display works on hd 5450.
so how can set hd 5450 default from either for BIOS or from amd catalyst options ?

Solution
I used windows 7 during that time, but on windows 8 and windows 10, right click on a blank area on your desktop, Display Settings, and select what monitor you want for your main display, and Check "Make this my main display".

I did this on windows 7 and all the benchmarks would run on the 5450, I would see it being utilized in MSI Afterburner and both the 5850's doing nothing. That all I did.

If it still don't work, I wonder if the the 5450 is just so old that the drivers arn't setup right for old card with new card, I know AMD did redo their drivers compared to what they were back in windows 7 days.

thanks for replying. it would work if i switch the graphic cards but i need 390x in fast lane i.e. 16x for better performance so using it in 4x slot is not an option. i am looking for any way i can change settings in amd catalyst or crimson control center

970 chipset grant you 22 pcie lanes. so there is no downgrading while running 1 16x and 1 4x

You will have full x16 gen 2 speeds on the top slot, not sure where AreFlame got that from.

Im not sure why your having issues, I use to run a 5450 along side of my 5850's because of the 5850's dual monitor flicker issues and I was able to set my primary monitor to my 5450, and did so for a benchmark a few times.

Maybe try to uninstall the drivers, Insert the 5450 into your x4 slot, install the drivers of course with your monitors plugged into it and then insert the R9 and see if the drivers will pick it up and install it and keep your primary on the 5450. I have no idea if that will will work.

Good luck and let us know what happens!

hey,thanks for replying,
"I was able to set my primary monitor to my 5450"
how did you manage to do that ?

display works on 5450 when 16x slot is empty ,but when i place r9 in 16x even if i don't install it's drivers(or even when i disable r9 from device manager) , display stops working from 5450 and it only works on 16x/r9.

it worked when i installed older versions of drivers

Thats good, Might have to pick up a newer cheapo card if you need the optimizations of the new drivers.

Actually I think I found the reason, AMD quit support for non GCN cards, so HD 5xxx and HD 6xxx are no longer getting driver updates. I think that is why he is having issues with new drivers and both of them cards.

I had the same issue and what I did was launch AMD Catalyst Control Center. Looked under Common Display Tasks. Made the weaker cards output the main desktop (in other words, changed from 2 to 1). And then I clicked on Disable Desktop and disabled Desktop 2. If you want the second desktop back, click on Extend desktop under Common Display Task.
