Hello all, so I am looking to upgrade my Gigabyte 7970 GHz edition. First let me give you my specs:

  • ■ ASUS Z87 Deluxe
    ■ Intel I7-4771 (overclocked)
    ■ 16 GB RAM, don't remember manufacturer or frequency (< 2000 Mhz)
I should also mention that I'm gaming at 1080p, not switching to 4k or multi-monitor in the near (>= 2 years) future.
The game that will set a new standard for a long time will be The Witcher 3 in terms of hardware needed to play at max with smooth gameplay. Now I want to play that game at max settings. My current GPU will not make that possible. I also want a card that will also last me as much as this one did (through the MANTLE API I was able to play Battlefield 4 at max settings as well as DAI but with medium tessellation and low AA).

As it stands now I should go with either GTX 970 / 980 (the latter will last me longer) or wait till AMD releases their new 3xx series. Can you help me decide what to do?

Extra: I don't want crossfire/SLI or dual-gpu. Can 970 / 980 even handle Witcher 3 at max? That would mean that at 1080p only people with two cards or dual-gpu can handle maxing it, which would be strange (because I don't think that AMD or Nvidia will release anything before the release of this game).

i would wait till AMD realses the 3xx series to see if they are any good compared to nvidea which could save you quite a bit of money but if you dont want to wait and you have the money for it go with the 980

Yup, I'm sure it'll be worth the wait. It's just around the corner. Plus, I have a feeling Nvidia will retaliate with a GTX 980 Ti or new Titan or something along those lines. Once you see all these new GPUs drop, you can make your decision.
BTW AMD drivers have came a long way and I have rarely had any problems at all with em. I've had my R9 290's for the past 11 months or so and it's been great. AMD has done great job on their drivers, I never have Crossfire issues.
