Cingular Wireless has agreed to fork over $5.1 million in back wages
to more than 25,000 call center workers, according to the U.S.
Department of Labor. Cingular made no admission of liability as part
of the resolution.
The back pay settlement was reached as a result of alleged violations
of the Fair Labor Standards Act's overtime provisions. Specifically,
call center workers in Springfield, Ill., alleged Cingular failed to
pay them for overtime work. Following the complaint, Cingular
initiated a self-audit of its call centers.

In 2003, rival T-Mobile USA agreed to pay $4.7 million in back wages
for alleged overtime violations.
