Cingular Wireless has agreed to fork over $5.1 million in back wages
to more than 25,000 call center workers, according to the U.S.
Department of Labor. Cingular made no admission of liability as part
of the resolution.

The back pay settlement was reached as a result of alleged violations
of the Fair Labor Standards Act's overtime provisions. Specifically,
call center workers in Springfield, Ill., alleged Cingular failed to
pay them for overtime work. Following the complaint, Cingular
initiated a self-audit of its call centers.

...

In 2003, rival T-Mobile USA agreed to pay $4.7 million in back wages
for alleged overtime violations.

Unfortunately, it doesn't.

Other Examples:

Sunbeam - Overstating inventory
MCI/WorldCom - We all know about them
Enron - We all know about them, too
Aurthur Anderson - In with Enron
Haliburton - Don't like politics...won't go there
Tyco - another overstating story.

From Fortune October 27,2003:

Partners in Crime

J.P. Morgan Chase
Citigroup
Merrill Lynch
plus
Deutsche Bank
Barclays
CIBC
And many other banks that provided the loans that made Enron executives
rich.

The sad part was so many people knew what was going on for a long time but
Sherron Watkins was the only one to spill the beans. My point is that
without other people's money these crimes are not possible. If we as
consumers make the large companies pay with the loss of our small payments
then they will be forced to be fair to their employees. All I have to do is
give up my cell phones :-( and not shop at Walmart and never buy anything
made in China with slave labor. Oh well maybe Cingular has learned their
lesson and I can keep my phone, but do you think it is ok for me to eat
dinner if the wife was the one who shopped at Walmart ?

No, you MUST stop eating until Walmart goes out of business.

In a world market that we are now in this really makes little sense to the more
intelligent of us.

There are a lot of things that American companys are invested in in the rest of
the world and vise versa.

Any one who is still thinking "Buy American" doesn't have a real grasp of
reality anymore.

As an example, Ford owns Volvo, Kia, 50<something)% of Mazda, Jaguar, and
others..... A world company. The new Ford 500 is built on a Volvo chasis.

Nokia makes handsets in Irving, Texas.

I could go on but hopefully you get the idea that I am tying to get across.

We'll remember your post when your job gets eliminated and you're
replaced by someone in India

My job can't be eliminated and replaced by someone in India. Plain and
simple.

However, if I were in that position I would simply have to recognize the
facts of the situation. We are a world economy now and not "Buy American" as
it might have been 15 years ago.

ALL Honda cars sold in the USA are made in America. All Toyota ..... I could
go on and on.

Stupidity causes all sorts of things. When Regan imposed an additional tax
on large motorcycles made on foreign soil, there were only 3 bikes affected.
All the rest of them were made in the good ole USA. For instance all
Kawasaki motorcycles, snow mobiles, ATV's etc - ALL Kaw's are made in the
USA that are sold here.

But for my job, I don't do "customer support" in a call center that can be
located anyplace in the world. I do localized engineering and project
management.

And you think that can't be computerized and outsourced? Schlumberger is
moving their engineering and project management to Beijing, China.
