Can someone fill me in on what "Clans" are all about and what is supposed to
be so cool about 'em?

Dude have you been living under a ROCK? No just joking... Its where you make
like a team of people (a clan) to face other clans.

Hmm - I actually do live very close to Round ROCK Texas....

Anyways - thanks for the info. I didn't think there was much to it and
apparently... there isn't!

It's not about being "cool", it's about having a group of guys to game with
on a regular basis. The clan may also have infrastructure that makes gaming
more fun, such as a voice server, a dedicated game server, a web site with
forums, an IRC channel, etc. Lastly it gives you a group to enter
scrimmages or ladders with.

Well it *could*, it all depends on the clan. They range from what I
described above, to an outgoing 12 year old who wants to be called "leader"
and takes anybody he can get to join his little gang -- no infrastructure,
no code of conduct, no practice schedule, no direction. They then proceed
to trash talk their way through each spawn camping, shee whoring game they
get in, and kick anybody that shows up on their server and beats them.

You should choose your clan carefully.

They should spend time deciding if they want you.
