Hello guys.

The rage for 60fps and 144fps theses days seems to fill the entire internet. But it makes me wonder something....

Around 5 years back, when I used to game on the ps2, it would feel very nice and things would seem smooth inspite of being 30fps lock. Fast forward to today and now I have a pc with i3 4130 and gtx 750.

Now I did play games at locked 30fps on my pc and even locked 60fps on some titles but for some reason, things dont appear as smooth as it used to. The gameplay appears rough filled with stutters and occasional tearings and frame drops. Even the videos on youtube seem smooth on 30fps but not in my case. But whatever be the case all I want to know is why my ps2 gaming seemd so smooth. If I upgrade my pc to i5 4690 + gtx 960, will I get a better experience or do I need to invest in a gsync monitor?

And the last doubt is that if I dont lock the gameplay to 30 or 60, and if the fps is hovering around 40-60 fps will I experience screen tears?

Please tell me how to eliminate this problem and get a super smooth gaming experience. Is it my monitor or is it my components or what?

Thanks in advance.

Your missing one problem that also helps tearing: Latency.

Your probably expereince some form of latency which can be worse than low FPS. This is because of the huge amount of lag it causes. Best way to fix this is to update your graphics drivers. However this is if your getting really really bad latency.

Screen tears will only occur when no V sync is enabled, this means that the frame rate and the refresh rate will not sync with each other at all. Casuing 2 frames to squish each other into one refresh. But if you turn v sync on, you will get no tearing. BUT, you will get an extra amount of latency since the GPU has to wait for the next refresh from the monitor to happen.

The reason why 30fps was so smooth on your PS2 is because the TV it was hooked up to was probably locked in at 30hz, where as with monitors the typical refresh rate is 60hz. In order to get the best expereince, FPS and refresh rate need to be equal. So for example 60fps on 60hz will be great since there will be no delays of any kind.

I hope this helps, if it's confusing I can direct you to some links which should give you a better idea of what tearing, latency, and Vsync is.
