Clawhammer, Newcastle, Socket 939, Socket 754

With DooomIII and HalfLife2 coming out it's time to at least think about upgrading.

I'm a bit unclear as to what is the best option though. Socket 939 is going to have a short life span and 754 is going low end? How long until something viable? What about the Newcastle vs Clamhammer? Why is the FX line even on the market?

Is Winchester the next core to replace newcastle? What replaces clawhammer? What socket will these be? Will it debut at 4000+? October 2004?

The most cost effective and most future proof CPU + mobo solution is Athlon64 3400+ (2.4 GHz, 512k L2 cache, Socket 754) with a good nForce3 250Gb mobo (like MSI K8N Neo Platinum)

The best price/performance A64 would be 2800/3000.

FX line is for people who have too much money to waste and are running out of ideas to waste their money.

In my opinion "upgradability" is over-rated. If you really think about it, until your next upgrade there will be so many changes, that you will need to upgrade your whole system, not just your CPU. SocketA stayed around for quite long but I don't think that something like this will happen again! Comparing price/performance I see S754 being a very good choice right now. Do I really care if the fastes S754 CPU coming out is the 3700+? No, because when I upgrade in 18 months from today, dual-core, DDR2 and only God knows what will be out by then!

Btw, the FX line is on the market for the same reason P4 Extreme Edition is on the market. And S939 will stay around for quite long, I don't know why you have the impression that it has a short life span.

If you are upgrading for gaming you should go with the LGA775 platform with HDA.

HDA improves gaming to a whole new level. Id rather play on the slowest Celeron w/HDA than the fastest A64 without.

Take the time to figure out what HDA is instead of wasting time trying to figure out what codename goes with what processor.

Actually I intend to buy a dual core in October does that count as a waste of money on 2 second rate chips.

If my math is right 2 second rates chips should equal a not so second rate chip.

Thanks for pointing out HDA since I missed the review at xbitlabs, but although that is really great the overall game performance of the P4 platform is still a bit behind.

I would think that HDA would be implemented onto sound cards anyways.

I think for the time being the amd 64 is the way to go.

Almost forgot about sound... it still sucks. Soon we can have an all in one intergrated CPU. The whole PC will be an Intel CPU with an icebox on it. Rockin. I hope the boys in microsoft will get on the all in one PC market soon.

Maybe if we get even luckier.. Bush will die in a car accident and Kerry will hold is breath till he dies.
