Hey,

I've just upgraded to Windows 10 and have only just decided to read up about it... The thing I found was about a clean boot prior to installing Windows 10, I know what a clean boot is and have done it once before; however, I'm not sure why I need to do it and what benefits it will bring. Is it completely necessary? Will it speed up my system (because it seems slower on win10 atm)?

I briefly stumbled across a segment of a forum concerning this and someone mentioned something about a 'refresh' feature in Windows 10 which does something similar to a clean boot? Can someone confirm or deny this please?

Also, if I decide to do a clean boot now, will it have any benefits or have I wasted my chance? I'm not, unless absolutely necessary, going back to Windows 7.

TL;DR -
What benefits does a clean boot bring to your system if you do it prior to upgrading? And is it vital?
What is the Windows 10 feature: Refresh? What benefits will that bring and should I do it?
What benefits, if any, will a clean boot bring if I do it while on Windows 10 and not doing it before upgrading?

Thank you all very much for reading and I hope you can help me out a bit :)

The clean install must be done AFTER upgrading to Windows 10. This is necessary to register the new Windows 10 Key to your device. Otherwise, you will wind up on Windows 10 without a product key and will be unable to activate it until you downgrade to 8 and upgrade back to 10.

The refresh is similar to a clean install I believe, but gives you the option of whether or not to keep your personal files.

A clean install is not necessary, but it can solve a lot of basic issues such as conflicting drivers and potential problems caused by old files. From my standpoint, it is a good idea to do a clean install and wipe your drives--but I also do not keep many personal files on my computer's drives.

Please note that if you do perform a clean...

Please note that if you do perform a clean install, be sure to create installation media (USB or DVD) using Microsoft's provided Media Creation Tool in case any issues arise and you have to reinstall Windows again: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
