I've got a computer that originally had XP on it and I've upgraded to windows 7 with upgrade media. I am rebuilding the computer (basically the whole thing) and I got windows 8.1 upgrade media for free from my university. Will I be able to install straight from the windows 8.1 upgrade media on the new motherboard? Or will I have to first install XP and then do a clean install of 8.1?

Ah, I see. I searched around on the web and found the following, hope it helps.

I scanned through them and they seem to tell you what to do.

As long as you have enough space on your computer it doesn't matter. If you are asking from the point of view of transferring files/settings/applications then presumably they are on the Windows 7 machine. If you were to install XP again then that would wipe away the Windows 7 install anyway, so why wouldn't you just wipe it away with the Windows 8.1 install?

Sorry, I don't think I was clear. Everything will get wiped and it will be a new, fresh install.

My question is whether I will be able to install from the upgrade media or if I will have to first install a non-upgrade version of windows first (my copy of XP) before the upgrade media will work.

Thanks.
