I am trying to go though my computer and clean up unnecessary programs and files to increase performance speed and free up some memory. I am a little worried about what files (temp files, etc.) that can be deleted during the dick cleanup process. I have seen some programs out there that help (should I delete it for example) but am skeptical of what they will bring onto my PC. I have also heard that defragging a ssd is not necessary and would like confirmation on this if possible? If anyone knows of a credible link that would walk me through this process it would be much appreciated.

Thank you for your time
Keith

Download CCleaner from the following link by clicking on "Download latest version"

Run the cleaner and it should clean out a good portion of unneeded files. Do not defrag the SSD. Another thing to do is to consolidate on which programs start up with your computer. Here is a tutorial for that.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-xp/help/setup/run-programs-at-startup

That will lessen the load on startup.
DO NOT DEFRAG YOUR SSD i is actually pretty bad for it

use ccleaner to do a quick clean of your computer and malwarebytes for viruses.

Go to your task manager if you use windows 8 and go to startup programs and uncheck any that you dont use (none of these are necessary for you PC)
in windows 7 go to your start menu and type msconfig and go to the startup tab

Temp files are usually not important.

Defragging your SSD is bad you will use up all your writes. However windows defrag and defraggler wont defrag an ssd by default and if you tell it to do that it will warn you that it is bad for the SSD. You can however optimize your ssd with a defrag utility this writes zeros on all the free space and can supposedly speed up writes a bit. Yah temp files are just that temporary they would be deleted automatically at some point anyways so it is usually safe to get rid of them.
