Greetings
I have a clevo W650EH laptop and i want to upgrade its cpu. Right now it has a B950 and im lookin to get an i7 for it. The thing is im really confused, and contacting Clevo in Taiwan(uk, ger and usa supports didnt even answer back) got me even more confused. The laptop has an Intel HM76 southbridge, with the sandy bridge chipset. And a g2 (988B r PGA) socket. So i assumed that every cpu for the same socket and chipset should be fine, and that logically ivy bridge cpus should not work. And that only if you have an ivy bridge chipset it might support sandy bridge cpus cause of backwards compatibility. But clevo send me a pdf with my laptop model, and there it states some cpus, but the only i7s it contains, are ivy bridge cpus. Am i missing something here? Prior to this i had concluded on buying an i7 2760qm. I suppose it would work just fine and just 10 more Ws shouldnt be much of an issue. Anyone that has more knowledge or experience on the subject? Also, my laptop has a GT 740M, i haven't really looked into that but im assuming it is soldered on the motherboard so upgrading that is out of the question?

Solution
You can't assume that a CPU must be compatible just because the socket type is the same - - - some newer CPU models require a BIOS update but if the laptop or motherboard manufacturer (laptop manufacturer in your case) hasn't released the necessary BIOS update then you cannot use that CPU.

I've no idea whether or not the GT 740M is upgradeable.
