I have windows XP home and my computer is making clicking sounds like someone is remotly operating it and clicking the mouse. Does not do it all the time but kind of worries me. I can watch the screen and see that my mouse is not moving but I hear the sounds? Anyone have a clue? I have noticed a slight decline in performance while online(sluggish) Think it might be spyware?

You will have to be a little more diligent in telling us exactly where the clicks are emanating from.

Definitely inside the comp box?

Put your ear next to the p/s exhaust screen, each cd drive, and each case fan. Also, check the speakers.

I have, twice in my career as a techie, heard clicks from cd drives and speakers.

My guess is the hard drive.

DVD if you have a cd in it maybe. Not much else except fans that move and could cause any noise.

I doubt it's a virus ... more likely mechanical.

Mouse clicking noise is Phisical not software. If you here a click noise like when a windows changes during navigation then you may have a that sound configured for some other event. Go into control panel and adjust your sound scheme to windows standard, and see if the issue is fixxed.

Also, you may have an application running in the background making the noise. try unchecking start up software in MSCONFIG

Thanks everyone I will try all suggestions. I am nearly positive it is not coming from the hard drive or fans. It is more like the sound made when a link or shortcut is clicked. Just started doing this and I have made no software changes that should cause it but my 3y/o has taken a keen interest in my pc lately and maybe he set something on accident (or on purpose the little devil)
