Client Drive Redirection Issues after Upgrade...Please hel..

After upgrading a Windows 2000 Server terminal server to Windows
Server 2003, only local Administrators of the terminal server can have
their local drives redirect in their RDP session. If I add the users
to the local Administrators groups, their drives will redirect also.
Obviously, I don't want to give all my domain users full
administrative privileges of the terminal server..... Is their a
local policy that I need to configure to allow Remote Desktop Users
the ability to redirect their local drives??

There is one policy "Do not allow drive redirection" under "Client/Server
data redirection" when is enabled will not allow client drive redirection
If this policy is not configured there is one more setting in tscc.msc under
client settings to "Connect client drives at logon"
Also on the client when you start Remote Desktop Connection program
(mstsc.exe) there is an option under "Local Resources" to redirect client
drives

I will try to repro this upgrade scenario in our lab. There should be no
change in redirection experience after upgrading to Win2003

Sorry James,
I tried to repro your problem and it must be something else that cause the
driver redirection problem. I will appreciate if you can be more specific
and help narrow the problem,
Do you have any other Win2003 server clean installed that redirect drives
for all users?
The win2000 you upgraded to 2003 was running Application mode or Remote
Administration mode?
Are those local user part of Remote Desktop Users group?
....

I have several terminal servers with Windows 2003 installed which have
no issues with drive redirection....these were all fresh installs
however. This is the only server I ever performed an upgrade on, and
of course it bit me in the ass..... The server was running in
application mode when I upgraded it. Adding the users to the Remote
Desktop Users group does not resolve the issues. The only way I can
get the drives to redirect for users is if I put them in the local
Administrators group on the terminal server.....so it is not a Group
Policy setting like some suggested.... These users are not even in an
OU, they are in the default users container in AD.....

I ran gpedit.msc on the terminal server.... The policy "Do not allow
drive redirection" is set to "Not Configured". Drive redirection is
enabled in tscc.msc. Disk Drives is checked off in the RDP client.
The users are in the Remote Desktop Users group on the terminal
server. Drives just won't redirect with these settings. As soon as
users are added to the local Administrators group on the terminal
server, redirection works perfectly.....

Hi again.
I did the upgrade again and this is what I found:
To preserve same user experience, after upgrade from Win2000 the drive
redirection is really blocked.
If the GP is set to not configure (the GP I was mention in the previous
post), the driver redirection depend on the setting in admin tool. This is
the fragment what this policy is saying:
'...
If the status is set to Not Configured, client drive redirection is not
specified at the Group Policy level. However, an administrator can still
disable client drive redirection by using the Terminal Services
Configuration tool.
...."

I checked the setting in tscc and the driver redirection was disabled. I
un-checked the settings and drive redirection stat work for me.

Please check if the setting for Drive mapping is not disabled on TSCC.MSC.
1. Start tscc.msc from command prompt
2. Open RDP-Tcp Properties dialog page
3. Click Client Settings tab
4. Make sure the check box for Drive mapping in Disable the following is not
checked.

A little more thoughts:
I did twice the upgrade from Win2000 to Win2003 and can not repro your
problem. Admin or non-admin users have nothing to do with those settings
Are you sure the TSCC setting is right? It is negative and when is checked
it will blocked the drive redirection.

Did you try to disable this GP it says if this policy is disabled drive
redirection is always allowed

I will try to get help for your problem but without local repro it will be
difficult to debug and investigate, unless we know a little more.
You already said that without any changes on server and client side when you
add the user to the administrators group the drive mapping is working fine.
And also your clean installed Win2003 servers redirect drives as expected
without any problem
One more question - When running Win2000, was this server configured to
redirect Citrix ICA-based clients?
Just a thought since we had some extra settings for Citrix client to
redirect or not client drivers when connecting to Win2000 server

The only box that is checked on the Client Settings tab is Audio
mapping, all other boxes are unchecked.

The only box that is checked on the Client Settings tab in TSCC is
Audio mapping. No Citrix involved.... I have not tried to set this
policy to disabled, but I will give it a shot....

I finally figured out the problem.... It actually turned out to be a
problem with the users' existing profiles. I made a new account in AD
and assigned the user to the appropriate groups to grant them TS
access. When I logged in as the new user to the terminal server, the
drives redirected without having to place the new user in the local
Administrators group on the terminal server. I logged on again as one
of the existing users who was experiencing the problem, still no drive
redirection. Logged off and logged in as Administrator, then renamed
that user's profile folder. When I logged back in as the user, the TS
built a new profile for the user, which now includes the redirected
drives.
