Clock Speed Vs. Multi-Cores

Hi all, looking for someone to help me in English choose a processor for my new rig. The machine will be mainly used as a protools and adobe premier rig. I'm looking at the i5 series CPU's but am tossing up on getting the i5-750 or the 661. Both processors are around the same price but the, 750 has 4 cores, and a larger cache. The 661 has a much faster clock speed and is of the new 32 nm size, but is only a dual core. It is my limited understanding the premier would make use of the extra cores but protools(being the sh!thouse program that it is) won't? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Get the I5 750 4 cores is better then 2 cores and you can simply overclock the 750 to 3.4ghz without a problem.

Yep, the i5 750 is way better. Not to mention it has a higher cache as well.

Thanks for your reply i'm not really confident enough to overclock a CPU, but maybe down the track would be. Do you know if Pro Tools LE 8 will even utilize more than 2 cores?

Cheers guys, are there any other CPU's you would recommend in this price range? Also if i go for the i5-750 what motherboard would you recommend given i would like to keep my geforce 8600GTS from my old system. Also this is the first sytem i will be building from scratch, do i need to get a new PSU?

trust me with the turbo alone the core i5 750 can perform well... even if u don't overclock... but the beauty of this processor is that it can overclock like a beast...

as for motherboards what price range are u looking at ??

i'd say get the asus p7p55d pro - $169
or the gigabyte ga-p55a-ud4p - $180
or msi p55-gd65 - $150

all of them are quite good...

was looking to spend about 180 Australian, something like the Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3R which I have seen for $175. The ga-p55a-ud4p looks good but is a little expensive(i'm a poor uni student) as it is around $240 aud. What are its advantages? I see that it supports SLI but the ud3r doesnt look to support, it also does 2 x RTL8111D chips (10/100/1000 Mbit), Support for Teaming and Support for Smart Dual LAN all of which i don't know what means.

why not try the msi p55-gd65... it supports crossfire too... and is lesser... ud3r is also a good board... consider the asus p7p55d
