can you please explain it in a simple way, i cant afford something like i7 and im looking between i3 or i5 , i want to know for the upcoming games in 2020 which cpu would i need ?

Solution
16GB(ddr3) is plenty, it's just isn't compatible with the newer boards(ddr4).
If you could get a good deal on a used 2600(k) or 3770(k), then that would be the next best option without changing the motherboard and ram as well.
Some of these are still floating around the retail price, which is BS. A cpu that old shouldn't be selling for much more than $100.
And for the retail price of those, you could get a new cpu/mobo/ram and be much better off.
I wouldn't pay more than $120 for one, and heck no for $150 - that's about half retail price!
Well there is a huge multitude of i3s or i5s. Most i3s don't handle most newer games very well.
So you'll wan't to aim at i5 if you have already wrote off i7. What generation exactly are you looking at ?
Have you considered Ryzen?
What is the rest of your system?

There is no "one or the other" really. Modern applications are preferring more cores, but this is useless with a poor clock speed.
It also depends on what the applications of 2020 require.

i play many games really, online and offline
i have 16g ram and gtx980 Nvidia
i do have i5 2400 right now (4 core 3.1) but it is very tired 😕

if i have to name few games as example it would be :
elder scrolls 6
cyber punk 2077
assasins creed legion
ashes of creation
etc...

Looks like you are due for an upgrade.
With those titles, I'd recommend at least a 6 core. Getting another 4 core won't be worth it. 6 core on Intel side: I5 8600k/9600k. AMD side: 2600, and 3600(launched today).
This move does also mean a new motherboard and ram.
Do you have a set budget?
