Clocks speeds vs memory

Hi,

Just a few questions about graphics cards in general. How important are the core and memory clock speeds? What "function " do they perform? Is the amount of memory in the card more important than the clock speeds?

Will the current 128MB cards(Radeon 9600 Pro, GeForce FX5200 Ultra etc.) be able to handle the latest games for the next year or so? Or do you think buying a 256MB will have more long-term value(here I am actually referring to the minimum specs required for games)?

As an aside, will buying more system memory, say from 512MB to 1024MB RAM, compensate for reduced graphics card memory?

Thanks

For the old gen cards, 256Mb is a waste. They will not use 'cus they don't have enough juice for it. And a 9600Pro is quite ahead of a 5200U... and it will run games to come. 1gb RAM is IMO the min for a quick system and it will help your games fps.

768megs of ram will be more than enough for any game. if you need 1gig of ram, then you are doing more than just gaming

But that amount, at least here in Portugal is more expencyve to get than 1024. Cus 3x256 price > 2x512.
