So I bought a brand new m2 nvme ssd and I want to transfer everything i have from the old one to the new one by cloning . Unfortunately , my motherboard doesn't have 2 slots for nvme . So one option is to buy a external adapter and do the job or clone my ssd to a hdd and then clone that hdd to the new ssd . Will that work ?
Any suggestion would be appreciated .
Thank you in advance

Solution
Not "clone", but rather make an Image of the current.

Like this:

Assuming you have another drive with sufficient free space to hold the entirety of your current m.2 drive:

  1. Download and install Macrium Reflect
  2. Run that, and create a Rescue CD or USB (you'll use this later). "Other Tasks"
  3. In the Macrium client, create an Image to some other drive. External USB HDD, maybe. Select all partitions. This results in a file of xxxx.mrimage
  4. When done, power OFF.
  5. Swap the 2 drives
  6. Boot up from the Rescue USB you created earlier.
  7. Recover, and tell it where the Image is that you created in step 3, and which drive to apply it to...the new m.2
  8. Go, and wait until it finishes.
  9. That's all...this should work.

Solution
What is the make/model of your new m.2?
Many vendors will offer utilities that will move your C drive to their ssd.

Since you do not have a second m.2 slot, you have a couple of options.
USAFRet has a good one which requires a second drive sufficiently large to hold your current installation.
When done, that drive can be used for extra storage.

I have used the samsung ssd migration app which works well.
If your extra drive is, for example a samsung sata ssd, you could move windows to that, replace the old m.2 with a samsung m.2 and repeat the process.
I have done this succesfully a couple of times.
Unfortunately, the migration app may not recognize a m.2 as a samsung ssd when using a pcie adapter via a usb cable.
It might using a adapter in a pcie slot.
Here is a link to the app and instructions:

Thank you all very much for your replies , which I found very interesting and i didn't know about them. My old NVMe SSD is 238GB NVMe SAMSUNG MZVPV256 and the new is SAMSUSNG 970 PLUS 2TB.

By the time you buy a pcie adapter and get it to work, you might just as well buy or borrow a 240gb sata samsung ssd and clone/move to that.
Then replace your old m.2 with the new 970.
Install the samsung nvme driver and migrate again to the 2tb drive.

After all is done, sell the pair of 240gb drives .
With a 2tb C drive, you likely have on good use for them.

As an alternative, buy an external large HDD and a usb adapter enclosure.
Use the procedure from USAFRet above.
When done, repurpose the HDD as an EXTERNAL backup device.
