I am trying to replace the SSD in my laptop with a larger one (Crucial MX300 525GB) and I need to migrate everything over. I don't have an M.2 to USB adapter, so I can't connect them to the same computer simultaneously. Is it possible to clone it indirectly? I.e. transfer from the M.2 to an external hard drive, then from the external hard drive to the new M.2. It seems like it should be possible yet I cannot find anything on it.

Solution

Yes, it should be possible.

Macrium Reflect.
Create a Macrium Rescue CD
With the external connected, make an Image of the existing drive. Include all partitions.
Power off.
Swap the drives.
Boot up from the Macrium Rescue CD you created.
It should guide you to selecting the Image (on the external drive)...

It should guide you to selecting the Image (on the external drive), and the target drive...the new m.2.
Go.

It should work.
