Hi there,

I have 1TB Hard Disk in my laptop and data occupied will be around 450GB. I have added a 500GB SSD to my laptop, now I want to move my OS to my m2 SSD. 1TB hard disk is my primary boot drive and it has windows OS installed and contains few files so the occupied space would be around 450GB out of 1TB. Now , I want to move the OS to my SSD. Have couple of questions regarding the move

- I am planning to use clone option in Macrium Reflect software as others like Minitool are paid . Can I use the clone option from my HDD disk to m2 SSD and go to BIOS setup SSD as BOOT disk?

- After I switch the OS to m2 SSD - can I follow this link

to complete the process

Laptop : Lenovo Ideapad y700-15isk

Thanks,
Prashanth

Specific steps for a successful clone operation:
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive

If you are going from a smaller drive to a larger, by default, the Target partition size will be the same as the Source. You probably don't want that
You can manipulate the size of the partitions on the target (larger)drive
Click on "Cloned...

To clone into a 500GB drive, the actual consumed space MUST be below 400GB.
Also, cloning is the whole thing, not just the OS.

What specific SSD do you have?
Thanks for your reply. I have this ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 512GB.

But we have softwares like Minitool Partition wizard, it has option Migrate OS to SSD does it migrate only the OS to SSD and rest of the files in my HDD?

You can manipulate the size of the partitions on the target (larger)drive
Click on "Cloned Partition Properties", and you can specifiy the resulting partition size, to even include the whole thing

Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
This is to allow the system to try to boot from ONLY the SSD
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe all partitions on it.
This will probably require the commandline diskpart function, and the clean command.

Ask questions if anything is unclear.

Really appreciate your reply with detailed steps. I have followed your steps,

  • My Disk has 1TB capacity
  • My C drive has around 844 GB and 687 GB free
  • I have started with the clone process by selecting only the C drive and target destination is my SSD
After the clone process is complete, since I have laptop will follow the below steps

  • Shutdown my laptop and go to the Boot Menu
  • Select my SSD as the main boot drive
  • Laptop will be booted from SSD.
  • Once the Windows is booted
  • Will open partition manager tool, can format the C drive alone. So I am not touching partition mentioned below
my Disk has the below partitions

  • C drive - Windows
  • D drive - Lenovo
  • *WINRE_DRV - Recovery Partition
  • LENOVO_PART - Recovery Partition
  • LRS_ESP - Unused Partition
  • * - Reserved Partition

Select ALL the partitions for that Disk 1.

And at the end of the process, you NEED to power down, disconnect the old drive, and allow the system to boot up with ONLY the new drive connected.
Don't power up and mess with the boot partitions first. Physical disconnection of the old drive before you turn the power back on.

Oh Okay. I have cancelled the clone now. will select all the partitions of Disk 1 and start the process again.
