I want to clone my laptop drive with regular backup of the cloned disk, and I have read that after cloning I cannot use the external disk in usb (of the same system) as the drives are having the same id. Also, two laptops cannot be having a clone of either, as Windows will detect the duplicate.
So, with my configuration of two laptops (having Windows 7) and an external hard disk, I must be needing a cross-over cable and need connect laptops in with it. Then, need put the external disk in usb of the 'other' laptop. Now, cloning can be done with regular updates possible for the cloned external disk possible too.

Solution
1. I haven't worked with a "cross-over cable" involving a USB external drive device so I'm not at all comfortable providing you with any advice pertaining to that type of configuration.

2. I'm really not clear on your precise objectives involving the two laptops. If I correctly understand your situation you're working with a 1 TB USBEHD that you desire to utilize as the recipient of files that you've copied (or cloned?) from the Sony laptop and then copy (clone?) those files to an HP laptop. You mention a figure of 30 GB of data.

3. I'm certain I really don't understand your precise objectives with respect to the copying/cloning the identical data from one laptop to another laptop - each containing different OSs and using a USBEHD to...
If you're going to get any sensible answers to your query you're going to have to pose your query in some understandable form. Given the information you provided, it's really impossible for anyone to understand precisely what's going on here as to the systems involved and your precise objectives.

So provide information about the precise systems involved, including the drives' disk-space capacities and the volume of data on each , their present configuration, and any other detail(s) you can provide that can help a potential responder to your query get a clear picture of your situation and understand EXACTLY WHAT YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE.

Don't talk in generalities. Be specific. Remember...we can't see your system, we can't feel your system, we can't work with your system; we can only determine all this only if you paint a "word picture" of your situation and objectives. Capiche?

I have two laptops, one of Sony with Windows 7 (ultimate edition) and other of HP with a different version of Windows 7 (Pro), apart from external hard drive (1 TB) and a cross-over cable. The external hard drive size is the same as the first system (Sony), and desire to clone the first system (Sony) on the external backup disk. The second laptop (of H.P.) is having disk of around 500 GB. The difference of the two laptops' hard disk size does not matter, as the files to be copied for updates or the common files are in total of around 30 GB. I want to connect the two laptops for any updates (in downloaded files, programming files for Matlab, etc.) to be transferred from one system to another. I want to connect the cloned external back up disk to the second laptop (of H.P.); and want to connect the two laptops with cross-over cable. I hope that this should work, and the only hitch should be that the external backup disk to be not connected to the second laptop (of H.P.) at the same time as the two laptops are connected together by the cross-over cable. The reason being the work-groups of the two laptops should be the same for connecting over the cross-over cable, and so the cloned backup disk (having the same drive identifier, as the first laptop (of Sony) ) may cause an issue. So, I hope to connect the two laptops for update transferring, and then copy that to the external backup disk later, when the two laptops are not connected.

So you'll have to forgive me for not being able to provide you with advice/suggestions that might meet your objectives. Hopefully some potential responder will come upon this thread and be able to provide you with some practical plan-of-action.
