My HDD has 512 bytes and my SSD has 4096 bytes so I can't clone does anybody know how to fix that. I would just install windows 10 but that doesn't work

This is the error
The application or operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors errors.

File: \windows\system32\winload.efi

Solution

You mean "sector" not section, right?

A direct clone will fail if the sector size is different. 512 vs 4096.
An Image is not a clone.

I've taken an Image of an SSD, applied it to an HDD, booted from it.
And then taken an Image of that HDD and applied to a different SSD.
Zero issues.

that doesn't work that was the first one I tried and where I found the problem unless you have to buy otherwise I don't have enough money to spend $29

Yes, differing sector sizes is a pain.

The easy way to clone with differing sector sizes is via an Image.

Do you have another drive with sufficient space, either internal or external?
Use Macrium Reflect https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree
Create a Macrium Reflect Rescue USB. Save this for later.
On this 'other drive, create an Image of your entire HDD.
Put the new SSD in and disconnect the HDD
Boot from the Rescue USB you created earlier.
Tell it what Image to use, and which drive (the new SSD) to apply it to.

Done.

Use the Free version. It works for cloning.
Other free option is this: https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree

Also, just using an imagining method, without re-aligning the sectors for SSD (keeping them aligned like the HDD) use is bad for performance and life of SSD. The software that I recommended does that automatically.
Just google "align SSD" if don't believe.

How so? The "Image" has no sector information.

None of these work when the section sizes are different

This matter was examined recently here:

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3792488/clone-spinning-drive-512-byte-sectors-ssd.html

Based on a Macrium FAQ here:

https://knowledgebase.macrium.com/display/KNOW7/Incompa...

LSS

Modern ssds use the 4K size sector but emulate the 512 byte size for compatibility . That is called a 512e sector. The FAQ document says an incompatibility between sizes arises when going to a larger sector size but that "There are no disks currently available that would cause this issue when connected directly (i.e. not via USB)." That's because 4K disks support Advanced Format 512e and permit directly accessing 512 Bytes of data via emulation.

I have several very modern ssds, 850/860/960 Samsung drives. Looking at them in sys info shows them with 512 sector size. The Macrium document mentions that disks with a physical sector size of 4096 Bytes that implement 512e will show 512 in sys info.

Check that the bytes/sector of the problem actually shows as 4 K ( 4096 ) then say good bye to the drive. It fails to emulate 512 .

yes I meant sector

I just read a lot of the posts about cloning drives. There is software that will do a workaround where you have your original HD/SSD with a sector size of 512 and your new drive (mostly drives 2TB and above and in my case was a Crucial MX500 4TB SSD. Actually the best way is to do a Backup to another HD/SSD and then restore it to your new SSD. I have a full version of Acronis True Image and this is the only way to prevent sector issues and possible damage to your new SSD. Yes it takes longer, but the benefits outweigh the risks. If you don’t want to buy any software you can always use windows backup 😂 it’s always good.. NOT! But another software I have used and like is https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree. As long as it’s for home use, you are good. Also, they just released version 8 and I believe it said in note after I had upgraded that they were discontinuing the free version at end of 2023. Don’t quote me on that, but it’s a really good free software. This is my first post in a long time, I forgot my old username and password, and the email I had then is no longer active as you know how cable internet companies gobble up each other and especially after 9/11, I was in the Army so I had no time for doing my passion work on computers and IT/Internet Security. Hopefully I can be more active and possibly help others in the future! HooAh! No Slack!
