I wonder if you can use this on an Ivy Bridge laptop to get triple display. I have an E5530 and according to dell ( as well as my testing with active-DP to DVI), you cannot run three displays.

Display port version 1.2 allows chaining; if your laptop has dp 1.2 (unlikely) then yes, you can.
