CM Hyper 212 EVO vs CM Hyper 412s Silent Overclocking

Solution
The CM EVO 212 compliments that i5 very well. It'll OC to 4.5Ghz stable under normal conditions w/o having to worry about temps. Go for the CM 212 EVO, your best bet :)

Oh./... I wasn't aware , that a particular CPu/Mobo made a difference for how good a cooler is:

but I';ll be using the 4690K + the Z97P D3.

Will the mobo go to 4.5Ghz too?

Also why is the 212 EVO better?

Quite surprised since the 412s is £5 more, and the model name would suggest it is better.

The MoBo doesn't OC, the CPU does. Your CPU can very well OC to 4.5GHz, and even beyond that. The 212 EVO is almost an official partner to go with Intel CPUs if you want a budget air cooler. Its less noisy, and does cools superbly. Rarely do I hear any issues of heating with that cooler (or due to that cooler's incapability). Also, its cheaper than the other one you suggested, so I can certainly say you should go with 212 EVO.

I compare EVO's performance with Dark Rock 3 and sometimes even Noctua D14 (its the best one around), which are double and triple the EVO's cost respectively.

In the US the 412s is about double the price. Only difference I can see is that the 412S has been plated, so I assume it has a near mirror finish on the bottom.

Evo 212 is a decent cooler, not the best on noise or cooling, but just about the best price/performance ratio out there. There are several equivalents but which is the best to pick depends on what sales are going on.

You do have to worry about maximum height, some cases are two narrow/short to have these stuck on.

Xigmatek Gaia, Thermaltake Frio, and a few others.

While the CPU is the primary factor to overclocking, the motherboard is just as important. Depending on the quality of the VRMs and their ability to maintain a proper voltage despite rising temperatures may be the difference between running stable at 4.5Ghz or having to drop down a little to gain stability.

I know the Mobo doesn't OC however it will determine how high i can take my CPU, for example...you can't overclock an i5 to 5Ghz with a Z87 G41 PC Mate regardless of how good your CPU cooler is.

Will the mobo allow the CPU to go 4.5Ghz? Is 4.5Ghz overxlock on the CPU past the Mobo's capablility?

Man I really appreciate that man.....since the cheapest Z series mob oright now is the MSI Z87 G41 PC Mate, followed by this Z97P D3! (tied with the Z87 G43 from MSI)
