Many times when I boot my computer, and get my first WindowsME desktop
image, the 'puter hangs with this as the only program running (using
ctrl-alt-del ).

I *think* I can UN-check this process from running *at all* with a neat
little utility called "Hijack This.exe".

If I do, what won't work anymore? Just my scandisk? Great, cause that
won't work anyhow!

If I restart, the machine usually cycles past. And I can get on with my
life.

Look, I know it's time to move on from a 5 year old operating system,
especially one from a company like Micro$oft, but ----

I betcha it's the KB 891711 in msconfig that is hanging you up, even when it is
unchecked! Uninstall that KB 891711 from Add/Remove Programs and see if that
takes care of your problem. If it does, don't redownload it from the Windows
Update Site.

891711 has absolutely nothing to do with CMDNINST - which is usually
activated (IIRC) when the system detects new hardware on boot

I suggest that you boot to Safe Mode and take a look in the Device Manager
there - is any entry duplicated?.Are any entries error-flagged??

891711 causes no such problems. The original version did however cause
blue screens for some users but that was fixed in the updated version
released in early April.

I concur with Messrs. Paton and Mike M. Suspect hardware or driver
failure.

I don't believe that story is over. But good luck to the OP by following the
other posters on this thread.

I think that Service Pack may have done the trick!

It's only been a few times, but haven't had it like it was.

Of course my machine, setup for automatic update, went and tried to install
KB 891711 again. I just removed it from system tray.

Thanks, MM.

And left your PC wide open to this vulnerability. Your posted problem has
nothing whatsoever to do with having 891711 installed, in fact it's far
more likely to be the result of NOT having 891711 installed.
