Did you have any joy trying to fix this? I've got the same issue. Plug in to mains, press power on, leds's light up, dvd spins up, cooling fan starts up but nothing more. Screen backlight doesn't even come on and no POST. After ~10 off and back on's it may boot normally. When booted laptop works fine. Next time i try and boot, it fails.
Tried removing the battery for 30 secs and then booting just from the mains, stripped the laptop down to the motherboard and re-assembled, when it does boot - left on for 8 hours to make sure battery & cmos battery get a charge.
Sometimes on boot, when the post does work I get an error saying the cmos battery is flat and the bios has lost all its settings (e.g. clock is wrong). The manual says this error can come up when either the main battery or cmos battery are flat (not very useful).
