Any of the so called surge protectors you put inside your house are close to worthless. You actually take the chance that they introduce interference or maybe filter the actual frequencies the data is using.
The device is nothing fancy. It looks like a standard coax barrel connector that has a wire running to the electiral ground rod. This is normally installed very close to were the power enters the house so it has easy access to the ground rod.
