Code 43 after updating Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M on Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Series 7559

So I recently updated my graphics card driver through GeForce Experience, and after the restarting as the program requested, it continued to ask me to update it. Did this a few times, but the same thing happened. Under Device Manager, I'm seeing the exclamation mark next to the listing for the Nvidia display adapter and it's telling me that "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)".

I've tried uninstalling through the device manager and reinstalling the driver. This doesn't seem to help. I've tried updating windows, my bios, and basically everything I can find to update and that doesn't seem to solve the issue either. I then tried uninstalling the driver (making sure Windows doesn't automatically reinstall it), going on Dell's site, downloading what I assume is the recommended Nvidia driver, and installing it that way. When I do this, I get an error saying that the update installer operation is unsuccessful. What I get is below:

Have you tried getting the driver that was there prior to the upgrade? You can try going to "System Restore" and select a restore point that is prior to the change and see if this resolves it.

Try downloading the driver from NVidia's site (https://www.geforce.com/drivers), remove the current driver, and install the downloaded one (I suggest using the "Custom (Advanced)" option during install, then select "Perform a clean installation" and uncheck the option for Geforce Experience).

Unfortunately, Windows just updated and for some reason I don't have any restore points available to me (automatically created or otherwise). Incidentally, after the update I now keep getting warnings that I have low disk space on my D drive, which I assumed was for recovery... another problem to deal with.

You can try going into device manager and see if it will allow you to rollback the driver. Sometimes yes/sometimes no. If not I would try getting the older one from the manufacturer's site.

Just tried this & installed an older version where I know it was working. No dice. Also verified that GeForce Experience is no longer installed.

Changing a product for the sake of profit isn't always the best option. I miss back when they would actually check programs out for issues and fix them before putting something out there for people to use.

Did you make sure to do it exactly as Prostar said? Skipping any of the steps will get you massively different results.

As a last ditch effort, you can try an application known as DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller). It does a pretty thorough job of truly removing all files & registry settings associated with the graphics driver.

To be honest, though? This is beginning to sound like a faulty GPU. Code 43 is often indicative of a failed device.

Yeah, I just tried it but it still doesn't work. Doesn't make sense to me though... seems to be too much coincidence for the actual GPU to fail right after attempting an update. Unless the update can somehow result in that?

Is there any way I can know for sure if the GPU is actually faulty? I am thinking I will have only one option left and that is to do a complete factory reset. Presumably that won't do anything if the GPU itself needs to be replaced...

By any chance, did you happen to try to update the driver to version 397.64? There are a lot of similar reports to yours with this driver being cited; it may not be such a coincidence.

Yup, still get the error after a reset. I would assume the GPU is dead then, but it really makes no sense to me that this just happened right after an update that seemed to be problematic. Can attempting to update a driver even damage a GPU?
Also, yes, that is the driver I was updating to.

Generally, no. Coincidences like this can happen, though, and you're not the first to have updated to that specific driver and then experienced problems.

Bit of a bump, but I have the exact same laptop and have the exact same problem as you... For me, reverting to older windows/driver versions also did not help. Have you solved your problem already?
