Hi there!

I currently have the i5 6500 and I've been noticing some heavy stuttering in certain games like BF1 and GTA V. I have had zero issues with my GTX 1080 and 144hz monitor and I feel as though the CPU is holding the rest of my system back. (Also use 16gb DDR4 2133mhz RAM)

Currently have the following upgrades in mind (and yes, I know I'll need a new motherboard):

  • i5 8400
    i5 8600
Which would be the best upgrade for me? And what would a good mobo combo be?

realistically, you could look for someone selling off a serviceable 6700K or 7700K, and probably be good for 2 more years....; the 7700K still fares quite well in most comparisons against 8700K and 2700X, the 7700k's 4c/8t design is still very adequate, unless streaming is a priority.

If determined to go new MB and CPU, I'd look for an Asus Prime Z370 and an 8700K or 8600K (in that order)....slap a Noctua NH-D15 on either, and call it a day! Sell your RAM, and get a 3200 MHz kit of 2x8 GB (16 GB total)

I'd steer away from the 8400 unless planning on an aftermarket cooler, many throttle out of the box even on gaming loads...

I'm trying to stay away from the K series of CPUs as I'm not a huge fan of OCing. I would've gone for the 7th gen CPU's but I currently have an H110 board from ASrock
