I was wondering whether or not coil whine could be a driver related issue. I updated to ccc 13.5 and then the issue was detected for the first time. I have two 7970 Ghz Gigabyte cards and neither of them has ever whined until the new update. I reverted back to the old drivers (13.2) and the whine was still noticeable. I have swapped the two cards around and the coil whine happens on both of them. So i was hoping someone could enlighten me on the possibility of coil whine being a driver related issue

Thanks :)

It could be changing the power beiing supplied to the cards in the case that there was reported crashes previously to the update. I cannot say since I have a 7870. Ontop of that, sometimes if you overclock a card, have a power surge, magnetic inference, etc, it could possibly damage part of the card and create the coil whine. This might have coincidentally occurred with the update, who knows.

Secondly, how is the temperatures of the cards and did you notice any slowdowns after you updated the drivers?

I have never overclocked my cards and my friend who also bought a 7970 3 weeks ago also started hearing serious coil whine after the update. So 3 out of 3 gigabyte cards are squeeling like pigs, only after the update and it seems to go back to ccc 13.2 doesnt work :/

i have modded my case and the cards always remain below 80 degrees celcius and no i havent experienced any slowdowns, just a few screen freezes

so i ran a unigine benchmark for about 20 minutes and after the benchmark, the whining is completely gone! the whining used to only appear when the computer idled on desktop and never in games but now it is completely gone :) hooray

Thats really good to hear!!! Glad it went away.
