Hello Guys,
I am currently a college student living in an on campus apartment style dorm. And the only internet provided is wireless internet, even though there is RJ-45 ports in every room. The problem is the internet is very slow and unreliable, I avoid wireless as much as possible. Over the summer I found the access point providing service to my room and purchased a switch 50ft Cat 6 cable and another power cable, because their Access Point was using Power over Ethernet. I was able to run the cable through the vents to my room and use my own router and plug my PC and other devices into the hard wire, while at the same time keeping their router functional.
So this worked up until a couple of days ago I noticed I had no internet and came to find everything I had put into the closet over the summer missing as well as thier Access Poing, except the cable running through the vent, so I bought an RJ-45 coupler and hooked it up and it worked fine until yesterday when they put their AP back (and took my wire out of the vent, but left it in my room with the coupler) and I haven't gotten back into the closet but I was told from some buddies that passed by while someone was working on it they apparently covered it with a metal box to prevent me from getting to the wire for it.
Now anyone with a little common sense knows that covering a Wireless Router with a metal box would kill any sort of signal that it gave off. I know what I have been doing probably wasn't 100% right, but no one has approached me or any one of my roommates about it or even left a note about it so I am wondering if there is anything I can do or a way I can do this without getting detected.
Thanks.
