Combine kits for TR2?

Thinking about a TR2 system build.
Looking, there are very few 8 channel kits available.
What do people normally do for X399 builds?
Do you combine 2 or 4 channel kits?

You don't need 8 sticks of RAM to run quad channel. You only need 4 sticks of RAM. So if you want 32gb, then get a 4x8gb kit and you will run at quad channel speeds.

In fact, filling all 8 DIMMs on the board will put more stress on the memory controller, this is why for dual channel boards, 2 sticks are better than 4. Same with quad channel boards, 4 sticks are better than 8. Plus 4 sticks are cheaper than 8.

What about combability to do 2 kits of 2x8 (in order to save money on the initial set-up)

RAM can be kinda finicky. Sometimes matching kits do not work. AMD does have some RAM compatibility issues. I have a 1950x and it took some work to get it to work right on my rig. Are you getting the 2950x? It should have a little better RAM compatibility, but that is mostly up to the motherboard.

But just because it sometimes does not work to mix and match, does not mean it wont work. So you can try two kits, but I would go through a vendor that takes returns just in case.

Thinking of a 2950x, not sure about MB and cooling yet.
If I go with a 360 WC, I will need a new case.
If I go with a ATX MB and 120WC or dry cooled I can keep cost down with current case... (given that i use the rig for DOTA and WOW, I don't need to OC the CPU)

The 2950x is really nice. It is a decent step up from the 1950x. But if you are just gaming, then save some money and go with the 2700x.

If you want to do liquid cooling, go with the Enermax Liptech. They have full plate pumps for TH. You can get 240mm, 280mm, and 360mm. I have the 280mm and it does a fine job. So you don't need a 360mm to keep it cool.

As far as motherboard, I have the Asus Zenith Extreme, but it is really expensive. I would recommend the x399 Taichi as it is a solid motherboard for the price.
