Command and conquer generals vista crash

Hello,
i have just bought cammand and conquer generals and have installed it on my laptop.
it meets all of the system requierments but when i start up the game the whole screen goes unusually large (i.e. icons in the background,cursor...) and the splash screen is too large and really off-centre.
yhen my laptop restarts saying it has recovered from a serious error and now a code statin....0x800106b5 comes up stating windows defender has stopped working.

and ideas?
