I've made extensive notes with my last comp character.
The way I'm improving I should get Morgoth before the end of the year.
The main mistake I made was a detection failure of several ghost at
1600 wich cost me 7 points of WIS. And once your WIS is so low it
will be even harder to deal with ghosts.

Maybe I will try an INT spellcaster next. Dark elves have sustain INT.
That does mean there will be a problem with food. Food doesn't look
like a problem until you meet Harpies. (all those who rely on food
to get them to 5000' haven't seen a harpy yet)

50 feet - kill gray mold with sling, get 3 points of karate
even with 9 points of karate, a small kobold nearly got me
11 karate, 2 sling/perc, 1 dodg/spellresist
read unknown scrolls on downstairs
100 killed grip without problems (13 karate, 27 HP)
no problems on level, now 15 karate 4 perc 3 sling/disarm 2 dodg 1
MR

250 learned scan object. found several blessed armour items.
$%@! bullroarer again. Killed him
convenant of faith

300 lots of orcs
350 tried potion of invisibility, 300 XP
400 killed wormtongue with 1 speed potion + lots of stinking cloud
after he got away for the first time
got hard leather cap from wormtongue. (serenity?)

me

600 Spotted a dark naga. Put every point in spell resistance

There's grishnakh but I can't get him because of the worm masses
650 killed grishnakh without using any consumables
I've got 4 cure serious, 1 ?phase and 2 !speed ATM

Very interesting reading - thank you.

year.

Did you mean month, or is this irony? Very hard to tell online!

INT.

Really? Necros get a food spell in book 3, which is findable. Don't
wizards get a food spell??

> even with 9 points of karate, a small kobold nearly got me

This was unlucky - I have vast experience at 50' and 9 karate usually
kills even a normal kobold without probs.

This, by contrast, was lucky - I've been killed several times by Grip
or Fang with karate in the teens.

> karate now at 20, start with spellcasting (piety)

Why piety? If I was going WIS I'd use nature - early books have more
useful stuff, plus the animal ESP is great later on. Was it just Scan
Object? That's the only big advantage I can think of.

Ah, I hadn't thought of that! You can't get the reward but the extra xp
would be nice.

Yes, isn't he a ah heck. Especially if you don't have !speed or -wonder.

Ooh, another great idea - thanks. Hadn't thought of that either.

> 1450 [...] Found book 3!!!

Pretty lucky I would say. They're native to 1250', have very high
rarity (60 I think!), and there are 4 possibilities.

> Aaargh. Nrulings. Run away!

Do you not have rfire? I thought they weren't too tough.

> 1500 2 powerful objects - special level.

Ah, so we agree.

> Wizardry now 50, learned phase warp

I'm wondering whether phase warp is a bit of a rip-off. My non-comp
char has 75 Wiz and still never ends up where he wants. I hope it gets
better in the 80s!

> 1650 More stormcrows. Got away with phase warp.

> They're native to 1300!!

Yes. I'm hoping that Scott will implement one of the ideas in this
thread http://tinyurl.com/b98cw for beta16. They do need toning down
somehow, and that thread offers about six or seven possibilities.

> There's also a manticore wich kills me.

Bad luck, but good effort - your 1800' is definitely the depth to beat.

For some extra weight, you do much better with javelins.
IIRC damage is [2.5 + 6*skill/100] * 1d5, more after OathOfIron.
In addition, they are pointy. Not clear if worth the weight.

I remember I always tried to start with 5+ javelins.

> met the first banshee. karate + blessing isn't good enough.
Skills

I think most ghosts resist blunt, so even blessed, damage is reduced
by a factor of 3 or 6. Maybe javelins?

> lost 4 points of DEX to Oober the spirit

I think that comps should be played without player ghosts.
Do any variants other than NPP have that as an option?

I think as a matter of principle, everyone should clear the bones
directory before starting a comp, so everyone is playing the
same game.

One good thing about S -- FeatherFall counteracts trap doors.

Take a look back in time. I remember multiple threads
griping about stormcrows.

Ironmen clear levels because once they take the down stairs there's no
turning back. So, you'd better be ready.

>> got wizardry to 40 (detect magic)

To prioritize exploration, I suspect. If the level has a powerful item
and a powerful unique on it, encountering the item first is a much
better proposition than encountering the unique first. Also, so you have
better odds to find the item before possibly being chased off the level
by something nasty -- breeder infestation, stormcrows...

Themed chest, perhaps.

Harpies are annoying. They are *fast* and hard to hit - let them do the
moving. But they are civilized enough to leave the food you stand on
alone, and no-one dodges area effects.

Scan object and sustenance.
Holy orb was a disappointment. Protection from evil is great.

If you put away the torch when resting (and meleeing silver jellies)
you can do REALLY long with a torch. If you buy 10 torches, you won't
run out of light before you find a lantern. After I had a lantern I've
discarded lots of oil.

And I do indeed clear all levels unless it's too dangerous.

They breed, and they eat walls. Need I say more.

I had better luck with cure serious wounds, once I started
getting crystal bottles. Better parchments are rare.

For the levels I couldn't clear.

About normal, I think. I found the book of combat + elemental sorcery
before this. And a second copy of holy of holies almost immediately
after.

It's the blinding. My character before this got killed by 20 nrulings
and a killer pink beetle. I had Plenty of mushrooms and potions but I
never recovered. In the meantime my strength got eaten away so i ended
(-3 slow)

It certainly saved my skin a few times. With phase warp and 2 rods of
blinking I can get away from anything that can't pass through walls
without using a teleport scroll.

I didn't think of that. It's still hard to drop all your valuable
mushrooms quickly. I hope noxious cloud will do the job for my next
character.

Using detect before you explore lets you know in advance
what items are magic and what aren't, which helps if you have
limited ID.

It is also useful for knowing where to go first, and can
rarely even be a lifesaver if it shows an object you need for
a current situation. (Like a wand or healing.)

Unfortunately javelins cost 28 AU. I don't think I can't afford more
than about 2.

I've looked it up. The suggestions offered were:

1. Avoid them. (I knew that one)
2. Get 25 points of nature lore so you can detect them
3. Learn burglary and set traps (you need to detect them as well)
4. Take them out of monster.txt. (can't use that in the competition)

I will use 2, but I think burglary is too expensive and trap setting too
bothersome.
