1. Make sure you did not 'lock' it. You can lock/unlock it via a touch sensor on or near the pad, or sometimes by software.

3. If 1 and 2 don't help/apply, your trackpad may either be out of order, or the cable that connects it to the board may have come loose (or be damaged).
 
id be willing to suggest its the cable underneath the palm rest that controls the touchpad. i find on some hp's installing the synpatics touch driver makes it worse but functional. All laptops with the expection of a few should work right off the bat including the touchpad as its a basic driver.
