So I found my old laptop from 2008 and I wanted to revamp it and give it some new life. I can't find what CPUs are compatible as it seems most models with the cq56 tag had an AMD CPU but mine has like an Intel Celeron. Any clues?
Thanks.

Standard 'too old, lol' answer.

Dual core pentium will pair nicely with xp, and you can run steadystate on xp to make it like a kiosk, so completely impervious to anything since it virtualizes the entire environment upon startup. I actually use this setup on my own older hardware along with firefox portable esr and can still go online without a problem.

And you're wrong about all the spyware and viruses:

No one cares about older software--it's actually the new ones that are the target since those are most used:

You could even run windows 98 straight in...

Here's a thread on the HP forum about cpu upgrades on your exact laptop. It also has a link to the service manual. :)

As far as what the laptop is good for--it will be an excellent windows xp machine if you max out the ram.

The thing I find fun about an older system I used to have is that it costs next to nothing now to max it out and it's surprisingly usable for regular work outside of Internet access. And don't forget using it to remote desktop into a newer system. I regularly do that with a windows98se machine that can rdp into windows 7, haha.

In the manual the best you can put is a Pentium which is not worth it lmao
Just keep it like it is but with Win XP you will have issues with new websites and many online viruses plus spywares. New browsers don't support Win XP. New antivirus don't work with Win XP.

Windows XP is an obsolete sytem, but you know what will run just fine on your old, 12 year old Celeron, and run modern browser software?

small linux distros like Puppy Linux and Mint.
And there's even some versions of ubuntu that will as 2x of the older systems I got used came with a version that worked decently. Although xp with ff portable esr works very well. It will hit 400 on speed-battle.com on my dual core machine.
