Compaq Presario CQ61-230SN WebCam - 96123.

Same old.
Built-in webcam shows up as 96123 in device manager.
This first happened couple months ago, i tried downloading drivers etc., nothing worked, so i thought it was Vista's fault.

Now I installed win 7 couple days ago, and it worked ..... for the first evening, next morning again - 96123 .... evening same day, what a wonder, it works, all the drivers show up ... again next day - not working ... and havent worked till now ...

I've tried searching all over google for some sort of driver that would work, but nothing, tried downloading drivers from manufacturers site, still nothing .... evin windows update can't find any driver ...

I really cant figure out what might be the problem, it works, then it doesent, then again it does, and now doesent ... -_-

could it be a mechanical thing?

Presumably you have read the manual for this laptop -- some models have a physical switch for the camera or an Fn key combination.
