compatability help please

i am looking to buy an AMD R9 280x but some people have being saying that i need to have a crossfire ready motherboard in order to use it is this true?

No that is not true. AMD R9-290x can be used on a computer with a available PCIe x16 slot
AMD CrossFire boards is for those who would like to run 2 AMD cards in CrossFire X.
A consumer motherboard with 2x PCIe x16 slots mostly supports it.
Nvidia SLI also needs 2x PCIe x16 slots, but both slots has to run x16/x16 or x8/x8
CrossFire X can work at x16/x16, x16/x4, or x8/x8
