Hi I'm getting pay through this week and really looking forward to finally having enough spare cash to be able to upgrade my GPU into something that can run games. I made a thread a few days ago asking if an R9 280 would be able to run on a 500W power supply and my hopes were shot down a bit because of the power supply requirements of the card. I was wandering what people on here would recommend me do, should I get a r9 270x OC or would I possibly be able to squeeze a r9 285 into my machine or would that be too much to ask? I'm not entirely sure of what to do at the moment and would really appreciate any advice or suggestions that people have. My budget is around £150 and thanks a lot in advance for any help given.

Hello... 1) Look on the Label of your PS for the +12Vdc amperage ratings.
2) what CPU are you using?

The 900 series GPU's are the best performance per watt at the moment.

Here is a table of TDP's for 200 series Gpu's... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD_Radeon_Rx_200_Series
Divide the TDP by 12 for your amperage needed.

I'm not sure what power supply I'm running and I don't want to tear apart my PC myself as I'm really not that good at doing things like that without breaking anything but I believe it's some kind of Corsair and my CPU is an I5-2300 2.8ghz (3.1 turbo) not ocd. To the person suggesting the 960 I can't find any Nvidia 960's for under £170 and I'm really budgeted :L

Hello... Your CPU requires 95 watts 7.9 amperes of +12VDC from your PS.

It only takes a few screws to see your PS Label, no un-wiring or un-connecting should be needed.
Otherwise we can only guess here... did you come here for "just guesses?"
To "guess" is to make a prediction without sufficient information or knowledge.

Sorry for the very long delay. I've been trying to figure out a solution myself. The person I bought this pc from said that I would have a 500 w corsair inside I didn't question model or anything and was happy with my purchase but after looking inside I found an "a open psu model- z400-12aab 400w" I have no idea what to do now. Any idea on where I could get a compatable 500w at a reasonable price? anything under 40 would be great.. thanks.

^ that's an absolute p1sser mate to be honest.
You're going to have to upgrade the PSU to put any half decent GPU in there.
EVGA 500B 500W 80+ BRONZE PC Power Supply https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00DZ6R9GE/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_4s46ub0J2YRQM

That's about the cheapest half-decent 500w there is.

Which isn't leaving you enough change for a really good GPU out of £150.
Any chance of upping the budget at all?

Solution
^ yes mate - its a decent enough PSU for the money.
You really shouldn't be having to pay someone to fit it though - its a 5 minute job - I would honestly be embarrassed or guilty at charging someone to fit a new PSU personally.
Its a shame as there are some cracking deals on r9 280's on amazon at the minute.

Great news! My friends seeing my look of disappointment have agreed to chip together to get me this PSU on it's own as an early birthday present (next month 😛) so I'm free to get any card for under £150. Any suggestions mate? (And thank you alot for all your help you've literally saved me about 12 boxes of ibuprofen from headache/stressing :L)

does it have a full size cd/dvdrom drive sitting horizontally?
undo the side of your case again, get a tape measure

measure in line with the 16 x pci-express slot (marked with the yellow down arrow)
across the length from the pci express slots at the back of the case,to the front on the case as far as it will go (if you have a hard drive cage in the way measure to there, that will determine the maximum length gpu you can fit)
while youre at it measure the width of the case externally across the front edge to edge.

Yes it has a full size cd/dvd driver, I just took a look at the card you linked and just from the width alone it's too big... My width measures at about 18cm and my length is 35

that a standard width case, which is fine.
if you have clearance length wise internally of 35cm along the line of the gpu slot then you have plenty of room for that card mate, its 282mm long oops 295mm long

And the amount of size downward doesn't matter? I mean the space downward is plenty just there's nothing that it needs to connect to or do I sound like an idiot? Like I know the width and length matter but what about the height? Or does that not matter at all

is there any way you can take a photo of your case with the side off & post/upload here??
using http://postimage.org/

I'll be able to tomorrow when my girlfriends home, she has a camera phone and I have a JCB brick phone, because I'm oldschool like that. Problem is she isn't finishing work untill 2'o clock tonight so if your on the forums tomorrow I can link you one then but otherwise I got nothing... Which is annoying for you and me and I'm sorry for delaying your helping of me? :L (I do absolutely appreciate all the time and effort you have put in this far and would happily reward you with a pint)

on the forums daily mate, generally a 280 will fit any standard case width wise - if you have a standard horizontally optical drive then the case is a standard width so thats taken care of.
length wise whatever length you have unrestricted from that pci backplate (the silver plate on the photo) to any obstruction inline with it is what length gpu you can fit.
height wise any 280 will take up 2 of the pci slots.
It only plugs into the topmost 16 x pci express slot (this will be the longest slot closest to your cpu) - the cooler will also take the next slot down (it doesnt plug in to any slots at this level - this is just room required for the cooler shroud & fans)

Then from what I saw I think I should be ok... I'll certainly take a picture to verify with you if your able to check it out that it should be ok, but otherwise I'm over the moon. The 280 I linked you was the card that I thought I wouldn't be able to run. Quite suprised that people were wrong about the 500W not being able to run it but I'm really pleased. Thanks mate. :)
