Compatibility between 2nd and 3rd generation mobile Core i* processors and chipsets

I understand that the HM65 mobile chipset (corresponding with 2nd-gen Core i3/i5/i7) uses BGA1023 socket. Is this socket also compatible with 3rd-gen FCBGA1023 processors?

Any help is appreciated.

What do you want to do? If you want to upgrade your CPU and your computer says it has a BGA1023 socket you will not be able to upgrade the CPU. BGA is not really a socket but the CPU packaging and BGA is soldered directly to the motherboard. Their is no socket so it cannot be changed without specialized equipment.

Thanks mate, I didn't realize BGA was soldered. Are any of the newer Core CPUs not soldered?

There are many Core CPU's that are not solderded what is the application? what do you want to do? I need more information to provide a recomendation.

I'm wanting to upgrade my Core i7-2670QM to either a 3rd- or 4th-generation Core i7

You may not have a BGA ARK says FCPGA. Being able to upgrade to a 3rd gen is unlikely you will need to look to see if the laptop manufacturer has a UEFI update to support 3rd gen CPU. 4th gen is a no go. In my opinion the gain in performance that you will see going from 2nd to 3rd gen is not worth the time and effort of the upgrade.

Thanks again for the help. I'm happy with the 2nd-gen performance, I just envy the 4th-gen efficiency and battery life increase. Guess it will wait until the next laptop

Your socket is most likely a G2, than have a look to your chipset. Intel provides these compatibility info.

Also, try to ask to your laptop manufacturer what upgrade the motherboard can support.
