Compatibility Issues With Software

Every time I go to download software off the internet, I get an error message telling me that it is not compatible and that I must go to the " store " to download apps that run on Win8.1. I tried checking the compatibility tab on properties but it gave me very limited if any options. I am running 8.1 on a Windows Surface brand new out of the box tablet. I do not have any altered hardware or software.

If it's the standard Surface, not the Surface Pro, it's running Windows RT and can't run standard x86 programs. Windows Store apps are the only thing that will work.
