Final build. Please provide the last pieces and check for compatibility.
Focus: gaming.
Budget: none. I will spend what I need to.
Performance: Needs to run high demand games Star Citizen, Kingdom Come, on ultra quality at 60+fps. Would prefer not to overclock, or very little. Links to suggestions would be appreciated.

- Case:Cooler Master HAF 912
- Power Source: Corsair TX750 V2 750W (Bronze)
- Ram: Corsair Vengeance DDR3 Dual Channel (4GB x 2)

- Hard Drive: Western Digital 2.0 TB
- Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-z68-d3H-83
- Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 6870
- CPU: Intel Core i5 2500k
- Monitor: ViewSonic VX2450wm-LED Black 24"
- OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

What I am thinking of replacing:
- Monitor: Benq XL2730z 27'' 1ms 144HZ
- CPU: Intel i5-6600k 3.5ghz
- need fan suggestions (evo?)
- GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB
- Motherboard: need compatible suggestions.
- Ram: need suggestions for 8GB
- OS: if absolutely necessary.

Solution
No. SATA is backwards compatible from generation 1 to the current generation 3. The drive will only run at its maximum rated speed however so if it is a SATA gen 2 3Gbps drive then it will only run at 3Gbps even if attached to a 6Gbps port.

The RoGs are very nice boards, although a bit pricey. I have the RoG Maximus VI Formula and I really like it.
For CPU fan the Noctua DH14 is always a good choice.

Go with 16GB. Some newer games will choke with 8GB of RAM and 16GB is pretty damn cheap right now.

OS: Windows 7 is fine but I highly suggest upgrading to 10. Only for the newer features for gaming such as DX12. A 980Ti would be a waste if you can't use DX12. As well 10 is a bit faster than 7 and more secure.

The Z97-A wont work with the CPU you have selected, it is a LGA1150 made for Haswell and Broadwell CPUs.

The Z170 Pro Gaming is a mid range but has gaming geared features.

The ROG Maximus VIII is a top of the line board with features geared towards overclocking and typically a bit better components such as NIC card, sound card etc.

Thanks--i might spring for the rog maximus, for no particularly good reason. Will i need to replace my current Sata?
