Hi Techies,

I have an 8gb 2666mhz corsair ram with an i8400 processor,

is it possible to add another 16gb 3000mhz ram with the existing Memory?

Will it cause any problem?
Can I operate with full 3000mhz?

Thanks in advance,
Vishnu

Solution
Mixing RAM like that is never a good idea. Another thing is they would default to the lowest frequency if they did work together.
You will have issues and would not achieve 3000MHz.
Your CPU is officially rated for 2666MHHz
Best is to buy a single kit the size and frequency selected from the motherboard QVL/

What is the make/model of your motherboard?
What is your cpu?

If the motherboard has 4 ram slots, yes, you can add in the extra ram.

Will it cause any problem??
Yes.
First of all mixed ram may not be compatible with each other.
Next, if you can get it to work, the ram must run at a common speed, namely 2666.

Can you run at full 3000?
No,
With only the 3000 speed kit, the max speed will depend on the make/model of your motherboard.

More than 8gb is a good thing.
How to get that will depend on your cpu and motherboard.

Thanks for your reply. here are some more information

Extra ram always helps.
You have two choices.
1. Add a 2 x 8gb 3000 speed ram kit and abandon the 8gb.

2. Buy a 2 x 8gb 2666 speed ram kit with the same specs as your current 2666 ram.
It is likely but not guaranteed to work.
Assuming the two kits play nice, you will have 24gb.
If your current ram is a 2 x 4gb kit, all ram will operate in dual channel mode.
If you now have a single 8gb stick, 16gb will run in dual channel mode( flex mode)
and the remaining 8gb will be in single channel mode.
On balance more ram will trump faster ram unless you are using the integrated graphics.

Unlike ryzen, intel ram controllers are very good at anticipating ram use so ram speed is not all that important.
Read this study on ddr4 ram scaling.
spoiler... negligible difference in real app performance or fps.
