Hi all!

I have a couple of question surrounding the GTX 1080. Mainly if my system/motherboard can support it and if it's worth the upgrade. I'm looking for something "future proof".

My current sytem:

Motherboard: MSI B85M-E45 Socket 1150
CPU: Intel Core i7 4790k @ 4.00 Ghz
GPU: Geforce GTX 970
8 GB DDR3 RAM

I'm not sure what power supply I have.. don't know where to read about it

144 HZ 1080p Monitor

Can I just plonk in the GTX 1080, if I would buy it, and I'm good to go? (After installing drivers) or does my motherboard and/or my power supply not support it? Also, what model of the 1080 is the best one right now? (LIke asus etc)

Thanks in advance

You don't know and without the power supply information we don't know.
Take the side of the case off and get the make and model number off the power supply.
If the power supply is good enough then it will work.
For brands i would go with MSI or EVGA.

yup need to know the power supply model to know what it can and can't handle. can't say if a 1080 will work or not until we know that. the cards have wildly different power needs so you may be able to run a low end 1080 but not the high end power hungry ones or some combo of that.

see here for all the cards and their power needs. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-3047729/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1000-series-megathread-faq-resources.html#17902598

but you still need to list your power supply for us.

Ok I found it

you need to spend some more money on a new psu before spending all that cash on a 1080 card!!

it might run a reference 1080 but i would not trust such an expensive card with such a cheap psu. looks like you spent a lot of money on a cpu but cheaped out on the rest of the system. do yourself a favor and add a new psu to the cart if you want a 1080 card.

But my GTX 970 has the same wattage requirement, and I bought the PC in a complete set. SO the 1080 requires the same so it should be fine?

as i noted and linked to the specs, some 1080 cards only need a single 8 pin connector. others use 2 x 8-pins or others a 6 and 8 pin. they use a lot more power than a 970 card does. the psu you have is not very good and i'd not trust a 1080 to that psu. but feel free if you wish. over $1000 in parts to a $30 cheap psu. does not add-up. a reference 1080 easily breaks 200w. some of the custom ones break 250w!! well above a 970 card.

so the answer you already decided on is "yah i can run it". so nothing more for me to add i guess, unless you want some suggestions on a quality power supply for your other quality parts.
