Hi all, i have a hitachi hard drive which is dead a few months ago, the platter spins but system doesnt boot. So i've planned to swap the platter to a new drive but am unable to find the model with same FW, I suppose FW is the firmware. Tried various online shops, everything but the FW is matching with my hdd. Fw on my hdd is 3MA but online i see lot of hitachi hdd with fw 3EA, 3MC, etc. My question is can i use these hdd with different FW for the platter swapping job? Thank you in advance for any suggestion.

Solution
Even if you find the drive with the same FW, it might not work since the drive's circuit board contains info about the disk layout of your drive which can be different even on drives from the same production batch.
By does not boot, do you mean that the OS doesn't boot or that the system does take a long time initialize before you get a message that no boot device was found?

does the BIOS recognize the drive?

if so, can you boot of the Linux Live CD and access the drive?
