Good day! I am seeking advice on building a new PFSENSE box due to some issues regarding my current box. Currently, I have an old ASUS X456UQ laptop as my PFSENSE server and I wanted to improve on stability, power efficiency, and performance. I was wondering if I could run a single interface VLAN setup similar to my current one on a LENOVO ThinkCenter M81 that I saw on my local second-hand market.
It has these specs:
  • Intel® Core i3-2100 Processor (3MB Cache, 3.10 GHz)
  • Intel 82579 Ethernet Controller
  • 280W, 85plus, auto-sensing
  • 320GB HDD (I will swap this out with my SSD from the current server)

Well, the processor on that system has slower single thread performance than your laptop, so performance will drop. It also uses 4x+ more power so would not help in that department either:

However, in terms of reliability it probably would be better than the laptop as laptops just aren't designed for 24x7 operation.
