Solution
Nvidia cards are fully backward compatible from 3.0 to 1.1. AMD cards are not. PCIe 3.0 will not work in 1.1, but a 2.0 card will. AMD 3.0 will only work in 3.0-2.0 slot. It has to do with the power efficiency system developed for PCIe 2.1 cards, AMD adopted that fully, their most powerful cards only requiring 2x 6-pin, while nvidia did not adopt the full system, so their cards can require up to an 6+8-pin. It means nvidia will still run on 1.1 power delivery, whereas AMD will not

That said, since you have a 2.0 mobo you should be fine with AMD.
