Hey guys! I'm trying to build a PC for gaming. My goal is to play Crysis on very high settings, but I also want to play WoW, Half-Life 2, Call of Duty 4, Sins of a Solar Empire, and Empire: Total War. Currently I am taking some flak for my build on some forums, but I'd like to hear what you think. I'm currently around $1500, but if I can trim some more off that price, while still playing Crysis on very high settings, that would be fantastic. Thanks guys!

Asus P6T Intel X58 Chipset CrossFire and SLI Supported w/7.1 Sound, Triple-Channel DDR3, Gb LAN, S-ATA Raid, USB 2.0, 3-Way SLI PCI-E MB 3-Way SLI
Intel i7 920 processor (4x 2.66GHz/8MB L3 Cache)
6GB RAM (2GBx3) DDR3-1600 Triple Memory Module (Corsair XMS3 Dominator w/DHX technology) NVidia Geforce GTX 285 2GB w/DVI + Tv Out
500 GB hard drive
Vista Home Premium 64
750 Watt -- Corsair CMPSU-750TX Power Supply Quad SLI Ready
IGMATEK Dark Knight 120mm CPU Cooling Fan System H.D.T. (Heat-pipe direct touch) technology CoolerMaster Cool Master CM 690 Gaming Tower Case
22" Westinghouse HD monitor

Now if you think that my set up isn't right, my other options are:

Motherboard:
MSI X58-PRO Intel X58 CrossFire Chipset w/7.1 Sound, Gb LAN, Triple-Channel DDR3, S-ATA Raid, USB 2.0, Triple PCI-E MB [- $25]

Asus P6T Deluxe V2 Intel X58 Chipset CrossFire and SLI Supported w/7.1 Sound, Triple-Channel DDR3, Dual Gb LAN, S-ATA Raid, USB 2.0, Three PCI-E MB [+ $117]

MSI X58-PRO Intel X58 CrossFire Chipset w/7.1 Sound, Gb LAN, Triple-Channel DDR3, S-ATA Raid, USB 2.0, Triple PCI-E MB [currently equiped]

MSI Eclipse SLI Intel X58 Chipset CrossFire and SLI Supported w/7.1 Sound, Triple-Channel DDR3, Dual Gb LAN, S-ATA Raid, USB 2.0, Three PCI-E MB [+ $180]

EVGA X58 SLI Intel X58 Chipset CrossFire and SLI Supported w/7.1 Sound, Triple-Channel DDR3, Gb LAN, S-ATA Raid, USB 2.0, 3-Way SLI PCI-E MB 3-Way SLI [+ $135]

PSU:
650 Watt -- Casegears ECO-Element 80 Plus Certificated High Efficiency Power Supply SLI Ready [- 55]
650 Watt Casegears ECO-Element 80 Plus Certificated High Efficiency Power Supply [- $55]
650 Watt -- Corsair CMPSU-650TX Power Supply SLI Ready [-25]
700 Watt -- Power Supply SLI Ready [- $55]

Graphics Card:
I didn't know if the GTX 285 would be best for this build, or if I should go with 2x HD 4850 1gig in crossfire, or would 2x HD 4870 1gig in crossfire? Or maybe you can recommend something even better for the build?

This is actually the first gaming computer I've ever tried to put together, so please feel free to assist in any way possible. All of your thought, insight, and comments are GREATLY appreciated. Thanks again!

I like everything in your list except the 22" Westinghouse HD monitor. What's the model number and price?
Have you looked at that monitor side-by-side with some others? I don't believe that monitor will match the quality of your other parts.

What price difference is there between the 1GB and 2GB models of the GTX 285? with a 22" monitor 1GB should be plenty of VRAM.

Is there a 2nd GTX 285 in your future upgrade plans?

I will upgrade my monitor if it means better looking games. I bought this monitor on Black Friday for $120 tow years ago, so it's done well thus far, but I've never been big into games. WoW was pretty much the extent of my gaming on PC. Now I really want to play Crysis on very high settings and have it look incredible both because of my computer and my monitor. What are some monitors that you recommend? I'm thinking something between 22"-24". Really though, I'd go for the best deal that would help my games.

I don't have any immediate plans for a second gtx 285 because they're so expensive and I'm already pushing my budget for the system that I've built. However, eventually I'll need more gaming power, so a second gtx isn't out of the question later. Would a 650 watt PSU be suffient for my system even if I upgrade to a second gtx 285 in the future?

Thanks for the insight and keep the great comments coming!

The only problem is that the 4870x2 2GB is WAY more expensive. I'd like to run a card of that magnitude, but I'm pushing my budget as it is, and I don't think I can go for the 4870x2 2GB. Unless you can find it for cheap for me :)
Currently I'm building a computer on ibuypower.com, but I'm just trying to make sure it looks really good, can play Crysis on very high, and will provide longevity as a whole system.

Using this system as a basis for this question, how much money would I save if I bought all of these components and put it together myself? I have a friend who has a lot of experience in putting computers together and I'm considering learning from him how to build computers, starting with this one for me. Thoughts?

Understood.

You should know that the GTX 285 has the second worst FPS to price ratio amongst single GPUs, only exceeded by the GTX 280. At least, as of last week. I compiled several reviews to multiple spreadsheets, and used 1680x1050 as one of the criterion....
Well, I was disagreeing with Cleve on his GPU article and set out to prove him wrong, but got a surprise :)

For $360 you could get two of these:

Or a single 4850X2 2GB for $300

If you get a monitor and want good quality, i suggest a 22-24" with HDCP and 1920x1080 resolution 2ms. Those monitors run 2 @ 60hz and have great fames...I have an Asus 22".

You will get a solid build with the parts suggested. Try looking into GTX275 x2 for SLI as well. And try CyberPower PC's too, they are decent ^_^

That would depend on how much they are charging you.

You want a guess.... $1400? Maybe a bit more... Yep. However, this build was VERY fast and could be trimmed down easily:

Most of the parts are your picks, although I did swap in the 4850X2 and used an 850TX. Came to $1473 before shipping.

So with deal hunting you can probably get away with $1450 final cost.

Sorry man. I'm really interested in seeing what you've built, but when I log into my newegg account, I can't see what you built. Can you post the specs here? Thanks!

Is this build better than the first one I posted? It's more expensive, but is it too powerful for what I'm going to use it for? Thoughts? Thanks!
